On Monday, the Department of Justice filed suit against Michigan’s Pittsfield Township for violating the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000.
The Pittsfield Township Planning Commission denied the Muslim Islamic Academy’s request to build a school on a vacant parcel of land in the township, citing traffic and noise. The DOJ believes this zoning request denial was a violation of the religious liberty rights of the school. In a DOJ press release, U.S. Attorney Barbara L. McQuade stated, “we filed this lawsuit to protect the right of all Americans to practice their religion and receive the religious instruction and education of their choice.”
It will be interesting to see how this lawsuit plays out. What are your thoughts? Check out the DOJ press release here !
