As much as it seems that things have changed, a lot has stayed the same. With the most recent heinous murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, the tide has risen, and many find themselves wanting to be a part of efforts to effect real change.
There are many ways you can get involved. In addition to tried and true grassroots mobilization efforts, legislative advocacy is ONE of the ways this can happen. What does that look like? It involves influencing the introduction, enactment, or modification of laws that have a direct impact on the issues we face in our communities daily. You can do this by working directly with legislators and even submitting draft language for new laws or amendments to the ones on the books.
Your first step is either joining or creating a coordinated organizational structure. After you take this step and work closely to research your cause and define your message, your next step is to approach the policymakers/legislators. The effort should be concentrated, strategic and communicate clear goals. There is quite a bit that goes into such an important effort but it is essential to have true social impact. Get involved somehow today!
