Employee discipline: What’s good for the goose is good for the gander!
It’s great to have impressive disciplinary policies and procedures in place but that won’t mean much if you are applying them in an inconsistent fashion. There’s an old saying that says bad as to one, bad as to all. This could not be any truer in the employment context. It is imperative to make sure that the disciplinary standards in place are APPLIED UNIFORMLY TO ALL OF YOUR EMPLOYEES!!! Even small variations in disciplinary action may lead to discrimination claims.
You must be sure that you do not discipline employees differently for the same offense. That inconsistency can cost you dearly. For example, if Jim violates your company tardiness policy, do not slap him on the wrist and write Karen up for the EXACT SAME violation.
